Ssion - “A Wolves Eye”

Ssion (pronounced “shun” — I know, I said it like the car, too) is an indie dance-pop collective fronted by Cody Critcheloe.  This particular track is off their underappreciated record, Fool’s Gold.  Pitchfork gave it a good amount of love, but I haven’t seen much ado about them on the blogosphere.

Anyway, “A Wolves Eye” takes about a minute to REALLY get into full steam (skip ahead if that’s your thing) but then merges modern day electro-pop with some sort of weird synth shit that kind of reminds of 16-bit MIDI sounds, a la Super Nintendo (seriously).  Then throw some piano in during the second verse and you’ve got yourself a song.  Definitely a weird mix, but it works really well.  Cody’s vocals are pretty dynamic; his howl before each chorus is epic (more so because he sticks to a low register in the verses), and the choruses are incredibly catchy.

Definitely a good way to start off the week.
