I think that I might not like new music

thedco:

Thanks to my boys at Last.fm, here are the 25 artists that I listened to the most during the course of 2008:

25. Lovedrug
24. Rise Against
23. Forgive Durden
22. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
21. Rival Schools
20. Third Eye Blind
19. Park
18. Glassjaw
17. Metallica
16. Lydia
15. Coheed and Cambria
14. IKE
13. .moneen.
12. The Who
11. Gatsbys American Dream
10. The Dear Hunter
9. Say Anything
8. Portugal. The Man
7. Alexisonfire
6. Brand New
5. Led Zeppelin
4. The Gay Blades
3. The Snake the Cross the Crown
2. Saves the Day
1. The Hold Steady

Artists in bold released a full-length album in 2008. That’s only 8 out of the 25 artists. Third Eye Blind released a 3-song EP in 2008, which barely qualifies, and the Gay Blades re-released their debut album in 2008, but I started listening to them before Triple Crown even signed them, so I’m not counting either. Saves the Day, Say Anything and Coheed all released full-length albums in Q4 2007, which I guess counts a little bit, but even so, that would be 11 out of the 25.

I think this number is a disastrously low ratio, particularly considering that of the 8 artists in question, significant percentages of my listening was devoted to the album of only 3 of them (The Hold Steady, IKE and Lydia). The same holds true if I extend that to the Q4 2007 as well.

That’s just sad. If you look at Last.fm’s overall charts, somewhere between 60-75% of the artists in question (depending on the chart you’re looking at) are artists with releases in the last year. That’s a lot different than 32%. And of course I share virtually nothing with any of the aggregate charts.

Among other things, this leads to me one overarching conclusion. I just might not like new music anymore. I may just be done with it.

That kind of scares me, actually.
