IAMX - “Nightlife”
IAMX is actually Chris Corner from the Sneaker Pimps. I posted a bangin remix of his single “Spit it Out” by my new favorite club act Designer Drugs a few weeks back; however, I figure today’s gloomy-ish weather here in Philly could use an appropriate soundtrack, and his non-remixed work tends to work well for this. Most of his songs create a very gloomy atmosphere by juxtaposing delicate piano lines and string parts with pulsing techno backbeats and squelching synths. Add a whole bunch of industrial grooves into all of these, throw in some pretty straightfoward pop vocals (aside from the lyrics, which are pretty left-of-center) and we have ourselves a pretty sweet album.
This in particular is one of my favorite tracks from the album; relentless kick drum, a flanged synth that creates an interesting “windy” effect, vocals reverb-ed to all hell, and whipping distorted guitar. I feel like you can play this both in the club or while running from someone pursuing you in the middle of a brightly lit city at night (I always imagine these things like I’m in a movie, deal) and either would be an acceptable route.
