Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground - “Hey Momma”
Being a big fan of Gatsby’s American Dream for years now, I’m a little biased in terms of always thinking their side projects are excellent.
…But seriously, they are.
Kay Kay is a collective featuring both the bassist (Kirk Huffman) and keyboardist (Kyle O’Quin) from Gatsby’s, and their sound is best described as a modern-day Sgt. Pepper’s type sound. The textures are layered on super-thick to create a really “airy” atmosphere, and the sound is uniquely vintage; no surprise, seeing as these guys are weird to the point where they were releasing stuff on cassette (including this track).
Kirk’s voice is smooth and soaring, and he delivers with a pretty solid confidence level, for a lead vocalist, considering he only provided backing vocals in Gatsby’s. Definitely a strange listen, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t freaking great.
