Calvin Harris - “Colours”
I first heard Calvin Harris as a guest on that awesome DIzzee Rascal jam, “Dance Wiv Me.” I liked his low-ish vocal range and non-chalant singing style, so I went to see if he had any albums of his own. Turns out he has a pretty good record, I Created Disco, that is a unique mix of vintage disco and modern electro.
While his record’s kind of polarized reviewers (electronic music purists find him a bit too “simple” and “kitschy”), I personally think it’s a great record to get down to. And when you’re talking about dance music, sometimes that’s really all you need. I chose “Colours” because I think this best exemplifies his sound — straight drum pattern; simple bass line; repetitive, clear vocals… it’s just good dance-able pop music, man. He layers things well and adds in flourishes tastefully (check the flanger during the chorus).
In short, this track is a really good listen if you don’t turn your nose up at simple electronic pop songs. Enjoy!
